Guide to Getting Married in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Here is your Guide to Getting Married in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Download and complete the marriage application form and marriage license form. BOTH FORMS MUST BE TYPED.  Mail the forms (2 of them) along with $200 ($100 for application fee and $100 for the license) certified check or money order to the court (no personal checks accepted) made payable to the "Superior Court of the Virgin Islands."

It is also a good idea to enclose a letter stating your arrival and departure date to the island, wedding date, the name of your officiant, when you will visit the courthouse to pick up your marriage license, and your contact information (phone number and email address). If either party has been divorced, a certified divorce decree with a judge's signature must be enclosed. If either applicant has been widowed, a certified death certificate must be filed with the application.
You can track your paperwork by sending it via priority mail. Once you see it has arrived, call the courthouse at 340-774-6680 (ext 6207) or ask for the marriage license department to confirm that everything is in order. It is best to call during the afternoon when they are less busy. There is an 8 day waiting and processing period, which can be waived depending upon circumstances. The application is good for 1 year. Court marriages in front of a judge are performed on weekdays by appointment and will cost $400. Religious and civil ceremonies should be arranged directly with officiants.

Once you arrive on St. Thomas,  you will need to visit the courthouse to pick up your marriage license in person.  Both the bride and groom are required to appear. You will need to bring your photo ID for your appearance before the Clerk of the Court (driver's license or passport).  Most couples go to the courthouse the same day they arrive in St. Thomas as it is only 15 minutes from the airport. Remember you're going to court, so business casual dress is expected. No slippers or shorts are permitted.
