ST. THOMAS CAR RENTALS |
|
In the Virgin Islands, we drive on the left side of the road. It's an old custom from when the islands were colonized by Denmark. A rental car or jeep is the best way to get around. Vehicles are American cars with left side steering. A rental vehicle is necessary to stay at our villa. You do not need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get to our villa. However, if you plan to drive up very steep locations to check out the view such as Mountain Top at St. Peter Mountain, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. U.S. driver's licenses are valid for up to 90 days. Renting a vehicle on St. Thomas costs approximately $70 - $150 (USD) per day. During the tourist high season, rates are at their peak. Weekly rentals are discounted by 15 percent. Summer rentals are typically discounted by $10 (USD) per day. Seat belts are required by law, and it is illegal to drive while speaking on your cell phone. The speed limit is 20mph in town and 35mph elsewhere.
Drivers holding international licenses must purchase a temporary foreign driver’s permit. They are available from car rental agencies who are allowed to pre-purchase them and have on hand to sell to visitors renting vehicles. They are usually $25.
