National Geographic, Conde Nast, Travel & Leisure, and Caribbean Travel & Life magazines have consistently rated 1-mile long Magens Bay Beach as one of the Top Beaches in the World! Magens Bay's northwest exposure means its turquoise waters are usually calm, although storms in the North Atlantic can occasionally generate large waves in the winter months. However, the property includes much more than a beach.
The 319-acre Magens Bay Preserve is owned and cooperatively managed by the Magens Bay Authority, the Nature Conservancy, and the V.I. government. The 68-acre Magens Bay Park property also includes 5 acres of coconut groves, 15 acres of mangroves and wetlands, a 6-acre arboretum consisting of large trees from four tropical continents, a 2-acre camping ground with parking, colonial and Amerindian archaeological remains, and hiking trails. Legend has it that Sir Francis Drake used Magens Bay as an anchorage while waiting for ships to plunder. Several commercials and movie scenes have been filmed at Magens Bay, including a scene in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. At Magens Bay Beach, there are lifeguards, parking, showers, bathrooms, snack counter and bar, and a souvenir shop. Beach chairs, floats, lounge chairs, mask and snorkels, fins, lockers, paddleboards, kayaks, and paddleboats can be rented.
The Magens Bay Authority works to preserve the delicate ecosystems of Magens Bay Park and to maintain the natural, pristine beauty of Magens Bay Beach for years to come. As such, it does not allow the construction of resorts, hotels, villas, homes, etc. on the property. Picara Pearl Villa & Suites Magens Bay is on Magens Bay and is only a 10-minute drive from Magens Bay Beach.
